The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Telecommuting to Work

Work is something that we all know we have to do, but really don’t want to do. No one says that they want to spend a third of their lives at work. That doesn’t sound fun. Spending time away from family, and missing out on family events can be hard. It can be so difficult for some individuals that they may try to look for a better job. They’ll search for a job that better fits their lifestyle. After all, we’re supposed to work to live, not live to work.

One of the things you should consider when looking for a job is the location. Driving to work can be draining, especially if you get stuck in traffic. You may want to consider telecommuting to work. For those unaware, telecommuting is when you don’t physically have to be at your job. You can simply log on to your computer and do your work at home.

Telecommuting has a lot of perks. You often don’t have any committed time frame, which means you are completely responsible for your time. You work when you want to. This gives you the ability to be flexible with your schedule. If a family emergency comes up, you can free up your availability. If you want, you can go to work in your pajamas every day. While this freedom is refreshing, it does comes with added responsibility.

Telecommuting is great, if you’re not a procrastinator. You need to be a self-motivated individual who makes time for work. While working from home you can easily become distracted with kids, cleaning, and sleeping. It can become difficult to concentrate on work. Plus, if you become frustrated with work, it stays at home. You can no longer escape from work to the sanctuary of your home. Work and home life become one when you telecommute.

When looking for work, you really need to pay attention to the location. Would you rather go the more traditional route and commute, or would you prefer the more modern method of working from home? Telecommuting isn’t for everyone because you need to be disciplined. If you know you are an avid procrastinator, then you may want to look for a more traditional job.

Work usually isn’t the highlight of our days. They say that if you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. What they don’t tell you is that finding out what you love to do is the tricky part. Then getting a job doing what you love is even trickier. Telecommuting isn’t for everyone, but it is a good option for some.
